How to Change Your Thoughts to Change Your Life
Have you ever felt like no matter how hard you try, you keep running into the same challenges? Like you’re stuck in a loop of overthinking, self-doubt or frustration? The truth is, the way you think shapes the way you experience life. And when you start changing your thoughts, you can change everything.
Today, I’m breaking down a simple and practical way to shift your thinking so you can start seeing real results. This is based on my three-part podcast series, How to Change Your Thoughts to Change Your Life. If you want to dive deeper, you can listen to the full series here.
What Thought Work Is and Why It Matters
Most people go through life on autopilot, believing every thought their brain throws at them. But here’s the thing; your thoughts are not facts. They are just sentences in your mind, and you have the power to question and change them.
Thought work is the practice of becoming aware of your thoughts, understanding how they impact your feelings and actions, and learning how to shift them to create better results.
In the first episode of my podcast series, I introduce The Model—a tool created by Brooke Castillo. It’s a simple framework that explains how thoughts create feelings, which drive actions, which then lead to results. I also bring in principles from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help rewire the way you think.
Why does this matter? Because when you change your thoughts, you change the way you feel. When you feel differently, you make different choices. And those choices shape your life.
What Happens When You Shift Your Thinking?
Once you start doing this work, things change fast. Small thought shifts can have a massive impact on your confidence, relationships, productivity and overall happiness.
In Part 2 of the podcast series, I share real-life examples of how this plays out. One of the key things I talk about is your Reticular Activating System (RAS)—a part of your brain that filters the world based on what you believe. If you think “I’m terrible at public speaking”, your brain will look for evidence to prove that thought true. But if you shift your thinking to “I’m learning to get better at public speaking”, your brain will start noticing moments where you actually areimproving.
The domino effect of this work is huge. You move from feeling stuck and reactive to feeling intentional and in control. You stop repeating old patterns and start creating new opportunities for yourself.
A Step-by-Step Process to Change Any Thought
So how do you actually do it? In Part 3 of the series, I walk through a simple five-step process:
Awareness – Start by noticing the thoughts running through your mind. Write them down without judgment.
Curiosity – Question your thoughts. Are they really true? How do they make you feel? What’s another way to look at this situation?
Rewrite the Thought – Choose a new thought that feels slightly better and more empowering. It has to be believable for it to work.
Anchor the Thought – Reinforce the new thought using NLP techniques like writing it down, pairing it with a physical movement, or visualising success.
Practice and Look for Evidence – The more you practice, the more automatic the new thought becomes. Your brain will start looking for evidence to prove it true.
This process helps you take control of your thinking in a way that actually sticks. And once you start using it, you’ll see shifts in your confidence, relationships and ability to achieve your goals.
